Update from Equity Now - December 1 2025
As the year ends and our legal case against Mount Sinai for age, sex, and race discrimination continues, we wanted to send you all an update.
In the 7 years since we filed our case, life has happened to all of us. We’ve gotten married, had kids, moved, lost loved ones, found new jobs…you name it. Your support has been invaluable over these years, and we continue to need your support as we stand for justice.
A quick update on the status of the case: we now have two active cases against the Mount Sinai Health System - one in federal court and one in state court. Both are actively moving forward through discovery, depositions and may eventually lead to trial.
It has been an incredibly long journey. It appears that Mount Sinai’s tactic is to drag this out with procedural delays, evasions and complications in the hope that we will be forced to give up. But we are still here and still going strong. While we are deeply impacted by this journey, we continue to believe our fight is bigger than us individually. This is a collective stand for the dignity and wellbeing of employees and patients, and the accountability of institutions - and we intend to see this fight to the end.
Many have asked what’s happened to the defendants in our case. Dennis Charney, the former Dean of Mount Sinai, has retired with much fanfare and celebration of his achievements and no mention of the toxic environment he perpetuated during his tenure. Prabhjot Singh has launched an Health AI venture, Altitude, which is concerning given our experience of his misrepresentation of data and technological capabilities while Director of the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at Mount Sinai (see the story of Atlas on our website).
Now more than ever, we recognize the importance of calling out injustice and creating positive change. So, no matter what happens with our legal efforts, we will strive to turn our experience into positive lasting impact in NYC and beyond. We are engaged in a number of ongoing advocacy efforts, which many of you have courageously supported.
Here's what we are up to and how you can participate:
1. We helped pass legislation that created an oversight Gender and Race Equity Advisory Board to the NYC Mayor and City Council to review the state of gender and racial discrimination in NYC’s health systems. The group convened this year and we are proud to support their efforts. We are now seeking similar protections at the state level via our Safe Healthcare for All campaign - see more here:
2. We have personally and collectively supported hundreds of individuals facing workplace discrimination, and have now formalized this into a program specifically working with women and people of color - see more here and please share this with people who need support.
3. We have given countless talks, contributed to op-eds and news stories, and maintained a social media presence to bring awareness to the issue of workplace discrimination and support those who are facing discrimination and retaliation. You can see our press coverage here and find us on these social media channels - please follow and amplify.
